Project Ishmael is a pro bono immigration legal program for children that seeks to:

1) meet some of the immigration legal needs of children in New Orleans through direct representation and education,

 2) coordinate with volunteer attorneys to help meet the diverse legal needs of women and children who currently live at Hagar's House, and

3) challenge systemic injustices that allow children and their families to be separated, harassed, deported or incarcerated based on skin color or immigration status.

  • We can use help with the following things:

    • Fundraising: Help us to support more children's cases this year. You can: Create a personal Facebook fundraiser for your birthday or have a party or a number of fun small or large things to help raise funds. (We can help with ideas.)

    • If you are bilingual in Spanish/English, returning Calls 2+ hours/week: Sign up for a regular, weekly volunteer shift returning calls & assisting callers with resources (requires at least a 2 hour commitment/week for at least 4 months-- because of the training required).

    • If you are a lawyer or a law student, work on (or take) a child's case- We would love your help drafting— we have templates! If you are a Louisiana barred attorney, you could take a child's Special Immigrant Juvenile Status case and we will support you each step!

    • Admin help-- If you are able to commit to at least 2-4 hours/week for at least 9 months, we’d love help filing and managing our donor database! If you cannot make that commitment, no worries! Please consider helping in the above ways instead.
